BYU's Carrie Summerhays retains the lead on the second day of the MWC Championship

BYU's Carrie Summerhays continues to lead while the Cougars fell five shots behind #14 New Mexico after the second round in the Mountain West Conference women's golf championships at Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George, Utah.

"We can't complain a whole lot about our position," said head coach Gary Howard. "We had two triple bogies on the thirteenth hole and had to count both of them. That was a very pivotal hole for us. If we had parred through that hole, we would be leading the tournament."

Summerhays shot a second round 75 to maintain her three-shot lead over Wyoming's Jordan Lintz. BYU sophomore Adrianne Gibby also continued to play well, shooting 79-77--156, helping the Cougars remain close to highly favored New Mexico.

"I should have run away with it today," Summerhays said, "but my putts just didn't fall. I was still pretty happy with my round. I just want to do my thing tomorrow and have fun."

With the Cougars only five shots out of the lead going into the final round, Howard feels BYU still has a good chance of winning the inaugural Mountain West Conference Championship.

"I think it's very doable--we can still win it," Howard said.

The final round of the Mountain West Championships will begin at eight a.m. on Wednesday at Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George, Utah.
