Summerhays leads Cougars at Dick McGuire Invitational

Albuquerque, N.M.--BYU's Carrie Summerhays shot a one-under-par second round to maintain her second-place position in the challenging Dick McGuire Invitational.

Eighteen of the top women's teams in the west are competing in this field including No. 1 ranked Arizona and current leader 14th-ranked Pepperdine. Although improving in the second round, BYU dropped to 15th place.

Besides Summerhays' stellar second round, Lisa Dernick and returned missionary MerriLyn Gibbs also played solid for the Cougars. Dernick shot another 78 while Gibbs celebrated her birthday by shooting a 76, her best round since returning from her LDS mission.

"Several players improved on their decisiveness in today's round," BYU head coach Gary Howard said. "We just need to work on our mental toughness and we will continue to improve."

The final round starts Saturday at 8 a.m.
