Summerhays places third at Dick McGuire Invitational
Albuquerque, N.M.--BYU's women's golf team finished 14th and Carrie Summerhays placed third against a tough field at the Dick McGuire Invitational.
Eighteen of the top women's teams in the west are competing in this field including No. 1 ranked Arizona and seven other top-25 teams. On a windy final day, the Cougars moved up on spot thanks to big rounds from Summer Pierce and Adrianne Gibby.
Pierce and Gibby and both shot 78 after struggling in the first two round.
"I felt really good about how Summer (Pierce) and Adrianne (Gibby) came back and finished strong," BYU head coach Gary Howard said.
Howard was also pleased with the play of his outstanding Junior Summerhays. Carrie shot a final round 77 and finished eight shots behind eventual champion Lorena Ochoa from team champion Arizona. Summerhays the 2000 MWC Co-Player of the Year and U.S. Open Qualifier was the low Cougar for the 15th consecutive tournament.
"Carrie (Summerhays) had a great tournament," Howard said. "That's a great finish for her. If she could have made a few more putts, she could have a chance to win this tournament, but that's the way it goes sometimes."
BYU will take a couple of weeks off before they resume play at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Redmond, Washington.
