Cougars Lurking in Fifth at MWC Tourney
SUN RIVER -- Four Cougars improved upon their first round scores, as the BYU women's golf team carded a 19-over 303 to remain in fifth place, after the second round of the Mountain West Conference Women's Golf Championships.
Senior All-American Carrie Summerhays jumped into a tie for sixth place after a two-over 73. Summerhays stands seven shots behind leader Lynette Duran of Colorado State. She needs one more individual crown to pass Pam Miller and become the winningest female golfer in BYU history.
After carding a first round 74, freshman Natalie Newren struggled Tuesday with a 79, but she remains in the top 20 as she stands in a tie for 12th.
Junior Jessica Gardner of Centerville, Utah, saw the biggest improvement of any Cougar from the first round, shooting six shots better in carding a 76. Gardner is currently tied in 22nd place.
Nicole Newren also shot a second day 76 to stand in a tie for 17th, and senior Lisa Dernick-Hardy had a 78 to stand alone in 21st.
San Diego State is the team leader after a 14-over 298 to lead by three strokes over second place Colorado State. First round leader New Mexico stumbled with a 305 as it tumbled into third place (598), four shots behind the Aztecs.
The third and final round of the MWC Championships will tee-off starting at 9 a.m. (PST) on Wednesday. The Cougars will tee-off at the following times: Jessica Gardner 9, Nicole Newren 9:10, Lisa Dernick-Hardy 9:20, Carrie Summerhays 9:30 and Natalie Newren 9:40.
