Mateo named to WCC All-Academic Team

SAN MATEO, Calif. — BYU women’s golfer Allysha Mae Mateo was named to the West Coast Conference All-Academic Team, the league announced Wednesday.

To qualify for WCC All-Academic honors, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher and compete as a starter or significant reserve in at least half of their team’s tournaments during the 2023 season. 

Mateo was named to the WCC All-Academic Team for the fourth-consecutive season after graduating in April with a Master of Accountancy from BYU nationally ranked Marriott School of Business. During her five years at BYU, the recent graduate held a 3.94 GPA in the No. 4 ranked master of accountancy program (U.S. News & World Report). 

Her academic prowess led to conference honors in each of her final four years as a Cougar, being named to the WCC All-Academic First Team four times ('20, '21, '22, '23), the All-WCC First Team three times ('21, '22, '23) and was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year in 2021.

"Allysha Mae gives 100 percent effort to everything she does," said BYU head coach Carrie Roberts. "I’ve always admired her commitment to giving and being her best. Her commitment to excellence has led to her immense success in the classroom and on the golf course. She is truly an amazing human and has always made us proud."

Along with her success in the classroom, Mateo was a staple in the Cougar lineup as a five-year starter. She teed it up in 53 events, playing 149 rounds with a 73.6 career scoring average. Her 72.71 average during her senior campaign was the third-lowest 18-hole scoring mark in program history. 

During the 2022-23 campaign, Mateo started in all 13 events for BYU while earning 11 top-25 finishes, 10 top 15s, nine top 10s, four top 5s and her second-career victory at the 2022 Miami Hurricane Invitational. 

Having completed her Cougar career, Mateo plans to compete in the LPGA Tour's qualifying school this fall as well as pursue a career in accounting.
