SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Allysha Mae Mateo carded five birdies in her final seven holes to finish her first round at the NCAA San Antonio Regional to sit in a tie for third after day one at TPC San Antonio.

“I was impressed with how patient Allysha stayed today,” said BYU head coach Carrie Roberts.  “She had a bit of a rough start but was able to give herself chances early on the back nine. Thankfully, she was able to capitalize on those chances and put herself in a good spot entering round two.”

The All-WCC First team honoree opened the regional with back-to-back bogeys on two and three followed by seven-straight pars to post a 2-over 38 on her opening nine holes.

After consecutive bogeys on 10 and 11, Mateo rolled in a birdie on the par-4 12th to move to 3-over on the day. After birdieing the par-5 14th, Mateo made three-straight birdies on 16, 17 and 18 to close her round, finishing at 1-under par in a tie for third entering Tuesday’s second round.

“TPC San Antonio is quite the test,” said Roberts. “This course requires you to be on top of all aspects of your game, especially with the tricky wind, to shoot a good number. Allysha will have to have her best stuff over the next couple of days.”

To advance to the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club, Mateo must finish as the low individual, not on an advancing team. She is currently tied for the low individual spot after 18 holes.

Mateo will tee off in round two at 8:55 a.m. CDT and will play with Camryn Carreon of UTSA and Haley Vargas of Kansas State. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.
