Mateo and Udom in top-25, BYU in ninth after 36 holes in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Allysha Mae Mateo and Alexa Udom sit in the top-25 after the opening 36 holes of the San Diego State Classic at the Farms Golf Club on Monday as BYU sits in ninth.

“The Farms Golf Club is a really difficult golf course that got the best of us today,” said BYU head coach Carrie Roberts. “We struggled throughout the first round and didn’t respond as we hoped. We’ll get back to work and figure out how to post a solid score tomorrow.”

Allysha Mae Mateo led the way for the Cougars on day one as she sits in a tie for 15th. The senior carded rounds of 76-75—151 for a 7-over-par 36-hole total. Alexa Udom shot 79-75—154 on day one to secure a tie for 24th going into the final round tomorrow.

The four ranked teams find themselves at the top of the day-one leaderboard with No. 30 Iowa State (303-289—592) leading at 16-over-par. No. 39 Georgia (304-294—598) is six shots back at 22-over, No. 50 Denver (300-302—602) sits at 26-over with No. 29 Houston (303-300—603) is one behind the Pioneers at 27-over-par. The UNLV Rebels (316-295—611) round out the top-5 at 35-over.

Georgia’s Jo Hua Hung leads the SDSU Classic at 2-under-par after shooting back-to-back 71s on day one. Hung leads by four shots over the No. 10 ranked golfer in the country Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn (Iowa State), Anna Zanusso (Denver), Caterina Don (Georgia) and Amanda Minni (Oregon State).

Kerstin Ngakuru and Lila Galeai are tied for 36th after posting a 14-over total on day one. Galeai shot 80-78—158 while Ngakuru carded rounds of 78-80—178. Adeline Anderson rounded out the scoring for the Cougars with rounds of 81-85—166.

The Cougars will begin the final round at 8 a.m. PST and will play with the Washington State Cougars and Oregon State Beavers.
