Cougars in second at Hurricane Invitational, Mateo and Galeai sit top-10
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — BYU women’s golf is 7-under-par through 36 holes of the Hurricane Invitational to sit in second, ahead of five top-50 teams with 18 holes to play at the Biltmore Golf Course on Monday.
“It was good to see the girls play some great golf today,” said BYU head coach Carrie Roberts. “Lea and I know that these girls are capable of shooting low scores that put us in a position to contend and it was nice to see them put everything we’ve worked on together today. We are excited for the challenge of chasing down UNLV tomorrow.”
The Cougars posted rounds of 286-283—569 to shoot 7-under on the opening day and are five shots off the 36-hole lead held by UNLV. The Rebels sit at 12-under-par after rounds of 278-286—564.
No. 15 SMU sits in third with scores of 290-281—571 for a 5-under total to best South Florida by a shot. The Bulls hold fourth at 4-under with rounds of 286-286-572 on Monday.
The host, No. 44 Miami, shot 283-290—573 to sit in fifth with No. 38 Nebraska (284-291—575) and No. 10 Kent State (291-284—575) are tied for sixth at 1-under.
Allysha Mae Mateo led the way for the Cougars on day one as she sits two off the 36-hole lead at 4-under. The senior from Hawai’i posted a 1-over 73 in round one before dropping three birdies and two eagles in a nine-hole stretch for a 67 in round two. Her 5-under-par second round is her low round of the season and matches her best 18-hole score as a Cougar.
Lila Galeai sits one-shot back of Mateo at 3-under after a 69 in round one that included five birdies with only two blemishes on the scorecard. An even-par second 18 was good to move the Lehi High School product into a tie for 7th.
Annick Haczkiewicz and Kerstin Fotu posted matching 72s in both the first and second rounds to sit at even-par for the championship in a tie for 27th. Each carded six birdies on their way to a 36-hole total of 144.
Adeline Anderson rounded out the scoring for the Cougars with rounds of 73-78—151 while Berlin Long, who is competing as an individual, posted a 2-over-par total. The freshman made three birdies in her last four holes to move into a tie for 34th with 18 holes to play.
The Cougars will tee off in the final round of the Hurricane Invitational with UNLV and SMU at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Live scoring for the championship will be available at golfstat.com with score updates posted on the BYU women’s golf Instagram and Twitter accounts.
