Cougars in seventh after 36 holes at the Dale McNamara Invitational
BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — BYU women’s golf sits in seventh place after shooting 307-291—598 on day one of the Dale McNamara Invitational on Monday.
“It’s always good to see Allysha play well and Berlin really came through for us in the afternoon,” said BYU head coach Carrie Roberts. “We had a hole or two in the morning that cost us, but we refocused on what we needed to do and were much better during the afternoon round.”
South Florida (291-284—575) leads the 13-team field at 1-under-par after 36 holes and holds a 3-shot lead over host Tulsa (292-286—578). North Texas (292-294—586) shot 10-over on day one to sit in third, three shots clear of fourth-place Nebraska (298-291—589). James Madison (207-285—592) rounds out the top-5 at 16-over-par.
“It was raining on and off all day and we got off to a rough start in the morning,” said BYU assistant coach Lea Garner. “I’m proud of how the girls stuck with it and all shot better scores in the afternoon.”
Allysha Mae Mateo posted the lowest score for the Cougars with opening rounds of 75-71—146 to hold a share of 12th going into Tuesday’s final round. The senior carded two birdies in her opening round with three in the second round to finish at 2-over on the day.
Kerstin Fotu and Lila Galeai are tied for 25th through two rounds. Fotu opened the tournament with scores of 78-72—150 with Galeai posting matching 75s in the first 36 holes.
Freshmen Berlin Long and Sunbin Seo rounded out the scoring for BYU on day one. Long is in a tie for 41st after rounds of 79-73—152 while Seo shot 81-79.
“The girls did a good job at adjusting to the weather and were more confident towards the end of the day,” said Garner. “We need to come out with that same confidence and minimize the mistakes in order to make our way up the leaderboard tomorrow.”
The Cougars will tee off in the final round paired with Kansas State and Sacramento State at 8:30 a.m. PDT Tuesday. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com with updates posted on the BYU women’s golf Instagram and Twitter accounts.
