Cougars in fifth at USF Intercollegiate with 18 to play
SAN FRANCISCO — BYU women’s golf shot 10-over par on day one of the USF Intercollegiate and sits in fifth place entering the final round at the Olympic Club tomorrow.
“There was a lot of good golf played by the girls out there today,” said BYU assistant coach Lea Garner. “Allysha’s ball striking allowed her to make 10 birdies and put herself in contention with one round to go. Kerstin also came out strong and played steady golf during the entire 36 holes.”
Allysha Mae Mateo fired rounds of 68-69—137 and is just one shot off the lead with 18 holes to play tomorrow. The senior is in solo second after a day in which she made 10 birdies and just five bogeys in 36 holes. She is one back of UCLA’s Ty Akabane who holds the 36-hole lead at 6-under.
“Allysha is playing really well and is in a great position to contend for a championship tomorrow,” said BYU head coach Carrie Roberts. “She is such a steady player and a great leader for our team.”
The UCLA Bruins (279-285—564) sit at 4-under-par and lead the USF Intercollegiate by two over the Cal Golden Bears (288-278—566). The Pepperdine Waves (282-287—569) are 1-over through 36 holes and are five shots clear of the San José State Spartans (277-297—574). The Cougars of BYU (290-288—578) round out the top-5 at 10-over.
Kerstin Fotu joins Mateo in the top-15 as she posted rounds of 72-71—143. The senior made three bogeys and two birdies in her opening round before carding 18-straight pars in the second round to move into a tie for 13th.
Lila Galeai and Adeline Anderson are tied for 38th at 8-over-par. Galeai carded rounds of 77-73—150 while Anderson recorded back-to-back 75s on day one. Freshman Sunbin Seo rounded out the scoring for the Cougars with rounds of 75-77—152 in her first collegiate start.
"The girls were focused today and if you take away just a couple of swings, we are right there,” said Roberts. We’re looking forward to going out tomorrow, playing some great golf in the final round and making a move.”
BYU will tee off at 9:06 a.m. PDT in the final round of the USF Intercollegiate with live scoring available at golfstat.com and live updates on the BYU women’s golf Instagram and Twitter accounts.
