CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – Allysha Mae Mateo was named to the WGCA All-American Scholar Team for the third-straight season by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association on Tuesday.

Mateo has been named a WGCA All-American Scholar in each of the last three seasons and has been as solid for BYU on the course as she has been in the classroom. The senior boasts a 3.94 cumulative GPA in BYU’s Marriott School of Business Master of Accountancy program that is ranked No. 2 in the nation.

“To have Allysha excel on and off the course not only shows how well she is able to manage her time, but also how committed she is to this team,” said BYU assistant coach Lea Garner. “Excelling academically at BYU requires a lot of focus and discipline and Allysha has shown the determination to do just that. It sets an example for the rest of the team and we’re excited to have her back for one more year.”

Along with excelling in her studies, Mateo started all 11 events for the Cougars during the 2021-22 campaign while holding a 73.38 scoring average, which ranks as the seventh lowest season average in school history. The Honolulu native also grabbed eight top-25 finishes, four top-10s and two top-5s while leading the Cougars back to an NCAA regional for the first time since 2018.

“Having a player like Allysha means less worry for me,” said BYU head coach Carrie Roberts. “I know how committed she is to her game as well as her academics and she is never satisfied with anything less than her best effort.”

The 2021 WCC Golfer of the Year has one more year to complete her master’s degree and has chosen to use her COVID year to come back for a fifth season with the Cougars.
