SAN MATEO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference recognized Allysha Mae Mateo’s accomplishments, both on and off the course, as she named to the WCC All-Academic First Team on Thursday.

“Having a player like Allysha means less worry for me,” said BYU head coach Carrie Roberts. “I know how committed she is to her game as well as her academics and she is never satisfied with anything less than her best effort.”

Mateo has received this honor in each of the last three seasons as she holds a 3.94 cumulative GPA in BYU’s Marriott School of Business Master of Accountancy program.

Along with her academic accolades, the senior competed in all 11 events for the Cougars during the 2021-22 campaign while holding a 73.38 scoring average and grabbing eight top-25 finishes, four top-10s and two top-5s. The Honolulu native’s prominent level of play led the Cougars back to an NCAA regional for the first time since 2018.

“To have Allysha excel on and off the course not only shows how well she is able to manage her time, but also how committed she is to the team,” said BYU assistant coach Lea Garner. “Excelling academically at BYU requires a lot of focus and discipline and Allysha has shown the determination to do just that. It sets an example for the rest of the team and we’re excited to have her back for one more year.”

As Mateo has one more year to complete her master’s degree, she has chosen to use her COVID year to come back for a fifth season with the Cougars. The 2021 WCC Golfer of the Year will lead a now veteran team looking to return to the NCAA Championships.
