FRANKLIN, Tenn. — BYU women’s golf is in ninth place after shooting 298 in the opening round of the NCAA Franklin Regional at the Vanderbilt Legends Club on Monday.

No. 9 Alabama and No. 21 Duke each posted a 1-under-par 287 on day one to grab a share of the lead. Host Vanderbilt is one back of the leaders after an even-par 288 in round one with No. 15 Texas A&M in fourth at 1-over. No. 4 Wake Forest rounds out the top-5 after a 4-over-par 292 to start off the event for the Demon Deacons. BYU is in ninth-place at 10-over-par going into day two.

"We didn’t do anything special on day one, but the girls played well enough to keep us in the hunt,” said head coach Carrie Roberts. "Tomorrow is moving day and we are in a good position to jump up the board if we can post some good scores. If we can eliminate some mistakes and make a few more birdies, we’ll be right there going into the final round.”

Lila Galeai led the way for the Cougars on day one as she fired a 1-over-par 73. The sophomore carded four birdies and five bogeys in round one to take a share of 19th place into the second-round on Tuesday.

Allysha Mae Mateo is one back of Galeai after posting a 2-over 74 in the first round. Mateo sits just outside the top-25 in a tie for 28th. Annick Haczkiewicz shot 75 and is tied for 38th. Haczkiewicz made three bogeys in her first seven holes to make the turn at 39, but made two birdies to finish off an even-par back nine to shoot 3-over on the day.

Adeline Anderson is tied for 43rd after a first round 76. Anderson was 5-over after nine, but carded a bogey and two birdies to shoot 1-under on the back nine for the Cougars fourth score. Kerstin Fotu rounded out the scoring for the Cougars with a 78.

The Cougars will tee it up in round two with the Oregon State and Boston beginning at 8 a.m. CDT. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com with live photos and updates on the BYU women’s golf instagram.
