STANFORD, Calif. – BYU’s Allysha Mae Mateo is tied for 44th at the NCAA Stanford Regional following a first round score of 3-over 74 at the par-71 Stanford Golf Course on Monday.

“It was an off and on day for Allysha Mae,” said BYU head coach Carrie Roberts. “Allysha Mae made six birdies, so she showed signs that she can be successful here.”

Mateo started strong, shooting 2-under 33 on the front as she overcame two bogies by firing birdies on holes four, five, seven and eight. However, three bogies and two double bogies on the back-nine proved costly as Mateo finished the round 3-over.

Despite struggling on the back, Mateo sits among the middle of the pack in the challenging field of 93 individual competitors. While Mateo trails Fresno State’s Brigitte Thibault by four shots and Cal State Fullerton’s Brittany Shin by two, she leads UVU’s Victoria Estrada by three shots and Long Beach State’s Holland Shourds by seven.

Mateo finished the opening round at Stanford tied with or ahead of all five golfers from WCC-foe Pepperdine.

Sadie Englemann of Stanford, Maja Stark of Oklahoma State and Irene Kim of Northwestern ended round one tied atop the individual standings following scores of 4-under 67.

Stanford leads the field of 18 teams with a first round score of 12-under 272.

Mateo will tee-off in round two at the Stanford Regional on Tuesday at 8:50 a.m. PDT. Follow Mateo in the second round with live scoring updates from Golfstat.
