Soifua, Mateo shine in second round at WCC Championship

HENDERSON, Nev. – Naomi Soifua and Allysha Mae Mateo each carded scores of 1-under 71 in the second round of the West Coast Conference Championship, helping BYU women’s golf maintain its hold of first place with a 36-hole total of 584 (+8) at Reflection Bay Golf Course on Friday.

“The girls were tough and hung in their nicely,” said head coach Carrie Roberts. “Allysha Mae made some solid putts down the stretch and Naomi had one of her best ball striking days of the year.”

Soifua followed up a 75 in the first round with a season-best score of 1-under 71 in the second. The senior from Provo, Utah shot even par on the front-nine and finished the day with two birdies on the back, moving her into a tie for fourth place with Cassie Kim of Gonzaga.

Mateo successfully maintained her hold of first place in the individual standings by overcoming three early bogies with birdies on four of the last six holes for a 1-under 71. Heading into Saturday’s final round, Mateo has a 1-shot lead over Quynn Duong of Gonzaga and a four-shot cushion over Caroline Hwang of Pepperdine who is in third.

Annick Haczkiewicz carded a 2-over 74 and remains in sixth place, just three shots outside of the top-3. Kerstin Fotu (75) and Lila Galeai (77) completed the Cougars’ scoring in the second round.

BYU enters the third and final round with a five-shot lead over second-place Gonzaga who has a 36-hole total of 589. Pepperdine is in third at 594, followed by San Francisco in fourth at 603 and Santa Clara in fifth at 621.
