Women’s golf posts three top-15 finishers at Lone Star Invitational

HUMBLE, Texas – Allysha Mae Mateo, Lila Galeai and Kerstin Fotu each finished in the top-15 at the Lone Star Invitational, leading BYU women’s golf to a fourth-place finish on Tuesday.

“It was super encouraging to see Lila and Kerstin step up this week,” said head coach Carrie Roberts. “Both have been working very hard and putting in extra time and it paid off.”

Galeai and Fotu tied for 15th after carding final round scores of 2-under 70 and 1-under 71 respectively. Galeai recorded five birdies on her way to the team’s best score of the round and a new career-best three-round score of 218.

Fotu also achieved a new career-best three-round score with a consistent third round that included 15 pars and two birdies.

Mateo finished tied for 13th with Sophie DiGesualdo of SMU after a third-round score of 1-over 73. The junior from Honolulu, Hawaii has now led the Cougars in scoring and finished in the top-15 in eight of nine tournaments during the 2021-22 season.

Annick Haczkiewicz recorded her best finish of the season at 31st, while Cynthia Tu and Naomi Soifua came in 35th and 37th respectively.

As a team, the Cougars have now finished in the top-5 in four consecutive tournaments.

No. 14 Baylor won the tournament with a dominating 38-under 826, SMU at 859 (-5) was second, with Texas State in third at 865 (+1) and BYU at 879 (+15). The Cougars finished nine shots ahead of Kansas and 19 ahead of Tulane.

Houston’s Maria Jose Martinez won the individual title with a three-round score of 14-under 67-66-69—202.

Having completed the regular season, BYU now turns its attention to the WCC Women’s Golf Championship scheduled to be played at Reflection Bay Golf Club in Henderson, Nevada on April 22-24.
