Fotu, Galeai post career-best rounds at Lone Star Invitational

HUMBLE, Texas – Kerstin Fotu and Lila Galeai achieved new career-best single-round scores as BYU women’s golf opened competition with rounds of 300-288—588 at the Lone Star Invitational on Monday.

“Kerstin and Lila were solid with their low rounds,” said head coach Carrie Roberts. “It was nice to see us get better throughout the day.”

Fotu led the Cougars in the first round with a 3-under 69 that included birdies on two of her final three holes. Heading into the third round, the sophomore from Alpine, Utah is tied for 17th individually at 147 with Marine Griffaut of Texas State and Sophie DiGesualdo of SMU.

After struggling with an 80 in the first round, Galeai flipped the script in the second round carding the Cougars best score of the day, a 4-under 68. The freshman from Orem, Utah had four birdies and an eagle to became one of just four golfers in the field to score in the 60s in round two. Galeai finished the day tied for 20th.

Allysha Mae Mateo had the best overall day for the Cougars. The junior from Honolulu carded a steady two-round score of even-par 73-71—144 and is tied for 12th with SMU’s Lauren Chappell and Serena Shah.

Annick Hackiewicz (153), Cynthia Tu (155) and Naomi Soifua (158) completed the team’s scoring in the opening rounds. BYU is currently in fourth place with a two-round score of 588.

No. 14 Baylor leads the field of six teams after a dominating 36-hole total of 28-under-par 265-283—548. SMU at 574 (-2) is second, with Texas State in third at 576 (E).

Houston’s Maria Jose Martinez leads all individuals after two rounds with a score of 11-under 67-66—133.
