Mateo, Galeai in top-10 as BYU opens Spring Classic
HURRICANE, Utah – Allysha Mae Mateo and Lila Galeai led BYU women’s golf to an opening day total of 298-303–601 on Monday, good for fourth place through 36-holes at the BYU Spring Classic at Sand Hollow Golf Course.
“Allysha had a really solid first round and it was great to see Lila play so well in the second round,” said head coach Carrie Roberts. “The pins were tough, and Lila adjusted so well to the speed of the Bermuda greens.”
Mateo carded five birdies on her way to a 3-under-par 69 in the first round and an afternoon 75 gave her an even-par 36-hole total of 144 for the day. The junior from Honolulu, Hawaii is tied for third in the individual standings with Sofia Garcia of Texas Tech and was one of just three golfers to score in the 60s on day one.
Despite an opening round 77, Galeai bounced back in the afternoon with four birdies on her way to a 2-under 70. The freshman from Orem, Utah recorded her best two-round performance of the season (147) and tied with Sarah Bell of Oral Roberts for best individual score of the second round.
Rounding out the scoring on day one for the Cougars were Kerstin Fotu (76-78—154), Cynthia Tu (80-80—160) and Naomi Soifua (76-85—161). Alina Vannarath (78-76—154) and Annick Haczkiewicz (78-80—158) competed in the tournament as individuals for BYU.
