Soifua leads BYU to top-5 finish at Inkster Invitational.
FAIRFAX, Calif. – Naomi Soifua recorded a team-best 3-over 75 in the final round at the Juli Inkster at Meadow Club Invitational on Tuesday, leading BYU women’s golf to a fifth-place finish.
BYU has now recorded top-5 finishes in two straight tournaments this spring, its last coming with a fifth place at The Gold Rush on Feb. 22-23.
“We feel we are making improvements,” said head coach Carrie Roberts. “Now we need to put three good rounds together.”
Soifua’s three-round total of 74-73-75—222 tied her for 11th in the individual standings with three others from Stanford and San Diego State. Soifua achieved her best finish since tying for sixth at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Kapolei, Hawaii on Oct. 28-30, 2019. The top 11 finish is Soifua's first top-15 finish of the season and the 12th of her career.
Allysha Mae Mateo (T18) and Cynthia Tu (23) joined Soifua in the tournament's top-25 finishers.
Washington took home the team title after a third-round score of 9-over-par 297. Rino Sasaki of Washington won the individual title after carding a 1-under 71 in Tuesday’s final round. Rounding out the top five teams were Stanford (882), San Diego State (892), San Jose State (897) and BYU (900).
With a three-round total of 291-302-307—900 at the Meadow Club, the Cougars finished well ahead of WCC-foes San Francisco (925) and Pepperdine (926), respectively.
The Cougars now return home to prepare for hosting the annual BYU Spring Classic on March 15-16 at Sand Hollow Golf Course in Hurricane, Utah.
