FAIRFAX, Calif. – BYU women’s golf is in second place after two rounds of play at the Juli Inkster at Meadow Club Invitational on Monday.

“It was refreshing to have two good rounds,” said head coach Carrie Roberts. "Our game plan for tomorrow will be the same. It will come down to how well we execute."

Washington leads the tournament after posting a score of 287-292—579 on Monday. The Cougars’ two-round total of 291-302—593, gives them a two-shot lead over No. 11 Stanford and leads of 21 and 33 shots over WCC-foes Pepperdine and San Francisco respectively.

Naomi Soifua carded two birdies on her last four holes of the day for the team’s best score of the second round and a two-round total of 74-73—147. She is tied for ninth with California’s Katherine Zhu. Soifua's 36-hole score was her best opening day total since her sophomore season at The Bruzzy on April 1-2, 2019 in Argyle, Texas.

“It was great to see Naomi play well,” said Roberts. “She’s working really hard.”

Allysha Mae Mateo finished rounds one and two with a score of 69-79—148 and is tied for 11th with Stanford’s Angelina Ye. Mateo first-round score of 3-under 69 was good for the second-best single-round score of the day.

Rounding out the Cougar scoring was Cynthia Tu (74-76—150), Kerstin Fotu (74-78—152) and Lila Galeai (80-75—155). With Tu tied for 18th, the Cougars finished the opening day with three players in the top-20 of the individual standings.

Washington’s Stefanie Deng finished Monday atop the individual standings after scoring 2-under 74-68—142 on Monday.

The Cougars will open final-round play at The Meadow Club beginning at 8:10 a.m. PST on Tuesday, March 9.
