Mateo paces women’s golf in final fall tournament

MACON, Georgia (Nov. 10, 2020) — BYU junior Allysha Mae Mateo shot a 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday in the final round of the Mercer Invitational in Macon, Georgia, to finish the 54-hole event in ninth place individually at 74-76-73—223. 

Mateo, from Honolulu, Hawaii, paced the BYU women’s golf team to a seventh-place finish with a 54-hole total of 301-313-307—921 at the par-72 Brickyard Golf Club on Nov. 9-10. Mercer University won the tournament at 294-303-286—883. UT-Chattanooga finished in second at 887, followed by Western Kentucky in third at 893. Rounding out the top five were Troy University in fourth at 902 and East Tennessee State in fifth at 911.

“It was so nice to have the opportunity to play golf this semester,” BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. “I’m happy for Allysha. She had a lot of success this fall with some great finishes. As a team we are looking forward to working hard this off-season as we get ready for the spring season." 

Rounding out the Cougar scoring for the tournament was Kerstin Fotu, who tied for 25th at 76-78-76—230, Cynthia Tu (36th) at 73-79-85—237, Naomi Soifua (T41) at 78-84-78—240 and Annick Haczkiewicz (T45) at 83-80-80—243. Alina Vannarath, competing as an individual, finished 50th at 84-82-80—246. 

The Mercer Invitational is the final event on BYU’s 2020 fall schedule. The Cougars will take a break before beginning the 2021 spring season in February.
