Mateo in third after day one at Lady Red Wolves Classic
JONESBORO, Ark. – BYU women's golfer Allysha Mae Mateo is in third place after carding rounds of 68 (-4) and 73 (+1) on the first day of the Lady Red Wolves Classic on Monday.
BYU is currently in 12th place after a combined 36 holes at 608 (+32). South Alabama leads the field at the Sage Meadows Country Club with a 576 (E), followed by Troy 586 (+11), Central Arkansas 588 (+12) and host Arkansas State 588 (+12).
"It was a rough day for us as a team," BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. "It was nice to see Allysha play well and she will have a chance with a good day tomorrow."
Mateo is just four strokes off the leader, South Alabama's Julie Hovland. The Hawaii product eagled the first hole and birdied two more holes in her first round of the day to notch a 68 (-4), tying for the best round of the day. Mateo eagled her first hole of the second round and picked up three more birdies but suffered from a few bogeys that set her back to a 73 (+1).
Naomi Soifua shot a pair of 75s (+3) and is tied for 31st heading into tomorrow's final round. Cynthia Tu recorded a 75 (+3) and 84 (+12) to tie for 71st while Annick Haczkiewicz posted an 80 (+8) in both rounds for 73rd on the day. Alina Vannarath carded an 80 (+8) and 82 (+10) to tie for 79th on day one.
