Cougars take third at Entrada

ST. GEORGE, Utah — The BYU women’s golf team shot a tournament-low 293 (+5) in Tuesday’s third round of the BYU at Entrada Classic to finish the tournament in third place.

“I’m proud of how we finished,” BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. “It was nice to see some fight today.”

Allysha Mae Mateo finished as the Cougars’ top individual performer, tying for third place after carding a one-over 73 Tuesday and a total score of 218 (+2). The result marked Mateo’s fourth top-five finish of the season and her sixth top-20 finish. The sophomore ended the tournament with the second-best par-4 scoring average at 4.07 and shot a team-high 34 pars and had 10 birdies.

Naomi Soifua recorded her fifth top-20 finish of the season, tying for 15th place at Entrada with a third-round 73 (+1) and a total score of 226 (+10). The junior tallied a team-high 11 birdies and carded an eagle on hole 11 of Tuesday’s third round. Annick Haczkiewicz notched her sixth top-20 finish of the season after finishing the two-day event with a total of 229 (+13). Haczkiewicz shot a three-over 75 Tuesday.

Cynthia Tu tied for 25th place with a final score of 232 (+16) after shooting a third-round 73 (+1) Tuesday. Kerstin Fotu took 68th place after it was determined that her second-round score was disqualified due to a score-card issue. Fotu went on to card a third-round 74 (+2) on Tuesday.

Anna Kennedy, competing as an individual, tied for 48th place with a third-round 79 (+7) and a total score of 239 (+23).

As a team, BYU finished with a tournament-best 4.24 par-4 scoring average at the two-day event. The Cougars also ended with the second-most birdies with 42. BYU finished just five strokes behind second-place Iowa and 24 strokes behind tournament-champion North Texas.

WCC foe Santa Clara took seventh place followed by in-state foes Utah Valley and Southern Utah at eighth and 11th places, respectively.
