BYU ties for fourth at The Gold Rush

SEAL BEACH, Calif. — The BYU women’s golf team recorded its fifth top-five finish of the season after shooting a third-round 298 (+10) Tuesday to tie for fourth place at The Gold Rush.

“Allysha (Mae Mateo) was our highlight with a solid top-five finish,” BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. “It was also nice to see Kerstin (Fotu) play well today. We’re hoping to get all five of our golfers playing well heading into our home event.”

Mateo finished as the Cougars’ top individual performer, tying for fifth place with a total score of 219 (+3). She shot a one-over 73 Tuesday and finished the tournament with a team-best 4.03 par-4 scoring average. The result marked Mateo's third top-five and fifth top-20 finish of the season. 

Annick Haczkiewicz also recorded her fifth top-20 finish of the season, tying for 18th place with a combined 225 (+9) through three rounds of play. She carded a third-round 79 (+7) Tuesday. Naomi Soifua came next, tying for 26th with a third-round 75 (+3) and a total score of 228 (+12).

Kerstin Fotu posted a team-low 71 (-1) on the day to finish tied for 36th with a combined 231 (+15) through three rounds. Fotu carded a team-best 11 birdies at the two-day event. Anna Kennedy wrapped up the scoring for BYU, tying for 55th with a three-round total of 239 (+23).

As a team, the Cougars finished with a total score of 898 (+34) at The Gold Rush. BYU tied with Charlotte for the fourth-place spot. Georgia took first at the tournament, while Fresno State and Long Beach State rounded out the top-three. WCC foe Santa Clara finished 12th.
