Haczkiewicz, Mateo in top-10 after day one of The Gold Rush

SEAL BEACH, Calif. — Annick Haczkiewicz and Allysha Mae Mateo both tied for eighth place individually through the first two rounds of The Gold Rush to put the BYU women’s golf team in sixth place.

“I’m super proud of Annick and Allysha’s comeback today,” BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. “They both fought back so well. Allysha had an absolute solid second-round with five birdies in the afternoon.”

Haczkiewicz and Mateo both shot totals of 146 (+2) through rounds one and two on Monday. Haczkiewicz carded a first-round 74 (+2) and a second-round 72 (E), while Mateo posted a 78 (+6) in the first and fired a tournament-low 68 (-4) in the second. Mateo tied the tournament-high with eight birdies on the day, firing a team-best five in the second round. Haczkiewicz carded four birdies while also adding an eagle in her first round on hole six. 

Naomi Soifua came next, also improving her score in the second with a 76 (+4) after shooting a first-round 77 (+5). Soifua posted a team-best 4.75 par-5 scoring average Monday and finished tied for 31st.

Anna Kennedy and Kerstin Fotu wrapped up the scoring for the Cougars, carding scores of 153 (+9) and 156 (+12) on the day, respectively. Fotu shot seven birdies through the first two rounds while Kennedy had three birdies and one eagle.

As a team, BYU posted a first-round 303 (+15) and a second-round 297 (+9) to finish in sixth place. The Cougars carded a tournament-high 27 birdies Monday and also recorded the second-best par-5 scoring average with a 4.93.

Georgia heads into tomorrow’s final round atop the leaderboard, while Fresno State, Long Beach State, Charlotte and Sacramento State round out the top-five. WCC foe Santa Clara currently sits in 11th place.

Tomorrow’s third and final round of 18 holes will begin at 8 a.m. PST. Live stats and the leaderboard will be available on Golfstat.com
