Cougars in third through two rounds at Rebel Beach

LAS VEGAS — The BYU women’s golf team finished day one of the Rebel Beach Intercollegiate in third place after posting a combined 586 (+10) through two rounds of play.

“Annick (Haczkiewicz) was solid today and has a chance to have a good finish,” BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. “We started off well but needed to minimize our mistakes in the second round.”

Haczkiewicz shot even par (72) in each of the first two rounds Monday to finish tied for ninth place. She recorded a team-high 27 pars on the day and added four birdies.

Naomi Soifua and Kerstin Fotu followed, as each finished the day tied for 21st after shooting scores of 148 (+4) through rounds one and two. Soifua fired a team-high 10 birdies while Fotu posted six.

Allysha Mae Mateo and Anna Kennedy wrapped up the scoring for the Cougars, finishing with scores of 149 (+5) and 151 (+7). Mateo and Kennedy head into tomorrow’s final round tied for 26th and 35th places, respectively.

Cynthia Tu, competing as an individual, carded a 152 (+8) to end the day tied for 42nd.

BYU will enter tomorrow’s third and final round trailing only USC and Fresno State. New Mexico and tournament co-host UNLV currently round out the top-five, while WCC foe Gonzaga sits tied for ninth.
