Soifua, Cougars save best for final round at WSU Cougar Cup
PULLMAN, Wash. — BYU women’s golf shot its best round of the WSU Cougar Cup Tuesday to finish the tournament tied for ninth.
"I love how we got better every round," BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. "Naomi (Soifua) had a great round and I'm really proud of how she played today. We led the field in birdies so if we can eliminate mistakes we will be really competitive. We will keep getting better and are excited to compete next week."
Led by Naomi Soifua, the Cougars shot a five-under 283 after carding a 293 in the second round and 296 in the first round. Soifua fired a career and tournament-low 64 (-8) in Tuesday’s final round after posting eight birdies on the day to finish tied for 16th. Her 64 proved to be the lowest single-round score in the tournament’s history and tied the lowest 18-hole score in program history.
Anna Kennedy followed up a solid first day at the tournament by shooting a 73 (+1) in round three, good enough to place her tied for 27th. Annick Haczkiewicz finished the tournament one stroke behind Kennedy after she also carded a 73 (+1) on the day. Allysha Mae Mateo ended tied for 42nd after shooting a three-over 75 Tuesday, while Kerstin Fotu shot a 73 (+1) to put her tied for 66th.
Cynthia Tu, who along with Fotu made her BYU debut at the two-day tournament, finished with a total score of 229 (+13) competing as an individual.
WCC foes San Francisco finished the tournament in sixth place, while Pepperdine ended tied for ninth along with BYU. Gonzaga finished in 13th place.
The Cougars play again next week at the Coeur d’Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational Sept. 23-24 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Live stats will be available on Golfstat.com.
