Pepperdine holds off BYU's push for fourth-straight WCC crown
SPOKANE, Wash. – The BYU women's golf team shot its best round of the tournament but came up just short of a fourth-consecutive title at the West Coast Conference Championships on Saturday.
"It was a disappointing finish but we fought hard and made Pepperdine shoot a record to beat us," BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. "I am proud of how we battled but it stings."
The Cougars combined for a 287, two off the WCC record, tied Saturday by Pepperdine's 285 that secured the WCC crown, finishing a combined three strokes (+25) ahead of BYU for the weekend to hold off the defending champs. The Cougars finished 28-over-par over three rounds to take second place. San Francisco (+36), Gonzaga (+46) and Santa Clara (+74) rounded out the WCC field.
Rose Huang finished second after a 68 (-3), her best round of the weekend. She finished three-over after three rounds.
Naomi Soifua also finished in the top five, taking home fifth place after a 74 (+3) on Saturday. Tied for eighth, Annick Haczkiewicz shot a 72 (+1) in the final round, also her lowest of the tournament.
Allysha Mae Mateo matched her solid second round with another 74 (+3) to finish in a tie for 13th while Anna Kennedy moved up to 18th with her best round in the finals, a 73 (+2).
