Cougars in third after first round of WCC Championship

SPOKANE, Wash. – BYU women's golf finished the first day of the West Coast Conference Championship in third place at Manito Golf & Country Club.

"Tomorrow is moving day," BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. "We'll look to move up the leaderboard to put ourselves in contention for Saturday."

With a 16-over score of 300, the Cougars trailed leader Gonzaga by eight strokes. Pepperdine had the day's second-best round at 14-over.

Naomi Soifua shot a team-best two-under to be tied for second overall. She was two strokes off the pace set by Gonzaga's Quynn Duong, who sat alone atop the leaderboard with an even-par.

Rose Huang and Anna Kennedy both scored four-over par to tie for ninth place on the day. Allysha Mae Mateo shot six-over, with Annick Haczkiewicz rounding out BYU's lineup with a seven-over.

The Cougars will play the second round on Friday and final round on Saturday. Live scoring is available on GolfStat.com.
