SEAL BEACH, Calif. – A strong final round gave BYU women's golf a fifth-place finish at the Gold Rush tournament Tuesday at Old Ranch Country Club.

"I was happy to see our freshmen throw down a couple of good rounds today," BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. "Rose (Huang) was solid as ever. We look to keep building off of each week as we get ready for Entrada."

Freshmen Allysha Mae Mateo and Maria Bernal Clavijo posted their best scores of the tournament in the third round with a pair of one-over 73s. Rose Huang, who had BYU's best overall score of three-over, shot her second even-par round to finish up.

Anna Kennedy posted a 74 to finish seven-over and tied for 19th. Naomi Soifua used an even-par through the first two rounds to finish eight-over.

With a 292, BYU bested the 300 mark once again in the third round, becoming one of just two teams in the tournament to break that score in all three rounds. The Cougars (+21) finished 12 strokes behind winner San Jose State and just a pair of shots out of the Top 3.

West Coast Conference teams Gonzaga (+30) and Santa Clara (+41) finished seventh and tied for 11th, respectively.

BYU next hosts the Entrada Classic on March 11 at the Entrada Golf Course in St. George, Utah.
