No. 28 women sit in fifth place after NCAA Lubbock Regional first round
LUBBOCK, Texas — Behind a 1-under-par round by senior Alexandra White, No. 28 BYU women’s golf sits in fifth place after the first round of the 2017 NCAA Lubbock Regional on Monday at The Rawls Course.
"I am super proud of Alex (White), Brooklyn (Hocker) and Rose (Huang)," BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. "We just needed one more score today, but we feel good about the course and our game plan for tomorrow."
The Cougars fired a team score of 297 (+9) on Monday. BYU sits one stroke behind No. 34 Texas Tech and No. 2 UCLA, and is one stroke in front of No. 30 San Diego State. No. 7 Arizona State leads all teams at +5.
White carded a 71 (-1) in the first round of the Lubbock Regional, and is tied for fourth place. The senior was one of six players to shoot under par on Monday, birdying four holes. She also made eagle on the par-5 second hole. White is coming off a first-place finish at the 2017 West Coast Conference Golf Championships.
Rose Huang shot +1 in Monday’s first round and is tied for 12th place. Huang birdied four holes in round one: 7, 9, 11 and 12.
Brooklyn Hocker also finished in the top 20 in day one of the three-day NCAA Regional. Hocker fired a 74 to tie for 16th place.
Kendra Dalton and Lauren Atkinson rounded out the scoring for the Cougars in day one. Dalton posted a 79 to finish the day in 69th place. The junior ended the first round strong, birdying 17 and 18. Atkinson shot +15 to tie for 93rd on Monday.
BYU women’s golf will continue second round play of the 2017 Lubbock Regional Tuesday at 9 a.m. CDT. Links to live scoring can be found on the BYU women’s schedule page.
The top six teams will continue postseason play at the NCAA Championships on May 19-24.
