WCC champion Cougars headed to NCAA Championships

PROVO, Utah — BYU will participate in the 2016 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships held May 19-25 at the Eugene County Club in Eugene, Oregon.

The Cougars will compete alongside 23 other teams that qualified from one of four regional competitions held May 5-7 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Bryan, Texas; Shoal Creek, Alabama; and Stanford, California. Six teams and three individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to the national championships from each regional site. Of the 384 regional participants, just 132 advanced to the finals.

Led by All-Region performer Lea Garner, BYU placed in thetop-six at the NCAA Regional in Baton Rouge and advanced to the NCAA finals for the first time since the 2006-07 season. Representing the Cougars at the NCAA Tournament are Garner, Kendra Dalton, Alexandra White, Brooklyn Hocker and Rose Huang.  

The NCAA Championship format consists of all 24 teams and 12 individuals completing 54 holes of stroke play, from May 19-22. The top 15 teams and nine individuals not on an advancing team will play one additional round of stroke play on May 23 to determine the 72-hole stroke play individual champion and also the top eight teams that will advance to match play competition on May 24-25.

Since the inception of the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships in 1982, the BYU women’s golf team has competed in 19 NCAA Regionals and advanced to the NCAA Tournament nine times.
