Four in top-10, BYU stays atop the leaderboard

Day 1

DANVILLE, Calif. — After day two of the West Coast Conference Championship Tuesday, No. 38 BYU women's golf sits in first place at 7-over, leading all teams by at least 11 strokes.

“I feel great about our finish,” BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. “Today’s play was tougher. The greens were firmer and the pin placements were more difficult. Overall we stayed steady and played a solid short game.”

The Cougars shot 7-over par Tuesday, the best team round of the day. BYU's four scored players all sit in the top-10 overall.

Shooting the best individual round of the day for the Cougars, Lea Garner leads all players in first place. Garner shot even par on the day, and sits at 2-under for the tournament. She birdied four holes in the second round, birdying three out of the last four holes of Tuesday's round of 18. Garner finished strong knocking in birdie putts outside of eight feet on both the 17th and 18th holes.

"All of the girls finished well today," Garner said. "We plan to carry it on into tomorrow's round."

Teammate Kendra Dalton sits in third place after 36 holes of play. Dalton shot 2-over Tuesday and is 1-over for the tournament. Dalton birdied holes 14 and 16 to shoot an even 35 on the back nine.

Rose Huang currently is tied for fourth place. Huang birdied five holes in Tuesday's round to help her shoot 1-over. The freshman shot 2-under (33) on the back nine and sits at 2-over-par after two days of competition.

Like yesterday, Alexandra White finished tied for ninth place. White, who shot 4-over Tuesday, sits at 6-over. White birdied the 17th hole.

Tied for 21st individually, Brooklyn Hocker shot 9-over on the day and is at 13-over through two rounds of play.

The Cougars will finish the WCC Championship Wednesday. BYU is seeking its first WCC Championship win. The Cougars will begin the third and final round Wednesday morning. Follow BYU women's golf live.
