Garner in second, BYU in first by five strokes at WCC Championship

DANVILLE, Calif. — With a 2-under performance from Lea Garner, No. 38 BYU women’s golf leads all teams at even par after the first day of the West Coast Conference Championship, Monday.

"We had a great start to today's round," BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. "The girls managed themselves and finished well. We look forward to competing tomorrow."

The Cougars shot a total score of 288 through the first 18 holes. As a team, BYU birdied 13 holes in round one.

Garner, who is tied for second place, started on the 10th hole. On the back nine, she shot a 34. Garner birdied holes 12 and 14 before moving on to the front nine. She finished the round strong Monday, birdying the last two holes of the day. On her final hole, Garner laid up in the fairway before hitting a nine iron within 15 feet of the pin and sinking the putt for birdie.

Teammate Kendra Dalton shot 1 under in day one of the WCC Championship. She is currently tied for third individually. Dalton birdied four holes in Monday’s round.

Currently tied for sixth, Rose Huang shot 1 over in the first round. She started out going 1 over on the back nine and finished shooting even par on the front nine.

Alexandra White is tied for ninth place overall. White birdied three holes on the day, and finished the round at 2 over. Brooklyn Hocker, who birdied two holes during her round, finished day one at 4 over. 

BYU will play the second round of the WCC Championship Tuesday. The Cougars will resume play at 9:15 a.m. PST. Follow BYU women's golf live.
