Garner in first, team effort leads BYU to first place finish after day one

SAINT GEORGE, Utah. —  With all four scored players finishing in the top-20, BYU women’s golf leads all teams at 12 over in the BYU at Entrada Classic, Monday.

"It was a great team effort today," BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. "I am proud of Lea and the way she played today, and am proud of the girls for battling it out on a long, tough day."

The Cougars started off the day strong shooting one under par through the first nine holes, with Lea Garner leading all players at 3 under.  At the end of day one, BYU sits in first place leading the 14-team field at 12 over. The Cougars shot a total team score of 588 through 36 holes of play.

Garner birdied three of the first five holes, and ended the day with seven birdies through 36 holes of play. On the 15th hole, Garner chipped onto the green from 65 feet out, placing the ball withing two feet of the hole to tap in for par. Shooting a pair of 71s in the first and second round, she finished the day in first place at 2 under.

Kendra Dalton also placed in the top-5 through the first two rounds of play. Dalton, who is currently tied for fifth, finished day one at 3 over. Dalton birdied the third and 10th hole of the second round. On the 10th hole, Dalton read the uphill break perfectly, dropping a solid 20-foot birdie. 

Rose Huang, who finished second individually last week at the Bay Area Intercollegiate, tied for fifth with Dalton after Monday's round. Huang started the day off strong birdying the first hole. She also birdied three consecutive holes, 14, 15 and 16, on the back nine of the first round. Huang shot a 76 in the second round and finished the day at 3 over. 

Birdying the first and third holes in round one, Brooklyn Hocker shot 2 under through the first eight holes. Hocker finished the first round at 4 over. On the second hole in round two, she saved par after placing a long 70-foot birdie putt within 18 inches of the hole. Through 36 holes, Hocker shot 10 over and is tied for 18th place.

Alexandra White finished Monday tied for 24th place individually. White shot 12 over through 36 holes. Lauren Atkinson, who is competing in the event as an individual, shot 7 over in today's day of play. Atkinson is tied for 12th place overall.

The Cougars will finish the final 18 holes of tournament play on Tuesday. Teams will tee off in a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. MST. The event can be followed live.
