Huang places second, team takes fifth overall

FAIRFAX, Calif. — Behind a second-place finish from freshman Rose Huang, BYU women's golf placed fifth overall at the Bay Area Intercollegiate, Tuesday.

"I was very proud of the way the team fought today," BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. "I thought we played great. We shot the third-lowest total score today. Rose came up huge for us. She had an incredible round. She really has been a difference-maker for us."

Huang finished the event at three under par shooting 67 on the day. Her second place finish makes for her first top-5 finish of the spring and fourth of the 2015-16 season. Huang birdied five holes on the day and did not score over par in Tuesday's round. Huang's 67 was the round score of the tournament. 

Kendra Dalton tied for 19th place individually. Dalton shot a pair of 75s in the Bay Area Intercollegiate and finished at six over par. Lea Garner and Brooklyn Hocker tied for 39th place overall. Garner shot 75 in Tuesday's round, while Hocker shot 74. Both teammates finished the tournament at nine over par. Alexandra White shot 11-over-par in the event and finished the tournament tied for 49th place.

The Cougars, who finished the day in seventh place first day, took fifth overall in the event. BYU shot a total score of 291 in today's round, 12-strokes better than yesterday. The Cougars shot 18 over par for the tournament for a total team score of 594.

Co-hosts San Jose State and San Francisco finished the tournament in eighth and ninth place, respectively. West Coast Conference foe Gonzaga took seventh place in the event, shooting 21 over par and Pepperdine took 11th. The Waves shot 27 over par as a team for the event.

No. 14 California placed first in the Bay Area Intercollegiate. The Bears shot seven over par as a team for the whole tournament, shooting four under par in Tuesday's round of 18.

The Cougars will continue their spring season next Monday and Tuesday. BYU will host the Entrada Classic held at the Entrada Golf Course in St. George, Utah, March 14-15.
