LAS CRUCES, N.M. – With four players individually placing in the top-10, the BYU women’s golf team is in first place (-6) by six strokes after its first day of play at the Aggie Invitational, Monday.

"It was a great team effort," Cougar head coach Carrie Roberts said. "It was great to see a collective effort from our girls today. The course is straightforward and it is one where good scores can be posted. In order to compete you have to be able to make a lot of birdies. We were able to do that today."

Sophomore Kendra Dalton, who placed second at the Rose City Collegiate last week, is currently in sole possession of second place (-4) after today’s first round of play. Dalton birdied four holes on the day. Senior Lea Garner and junior Alexandra White are tied for fourth place at one-under-par, while freshman Rose Huang is tied for eighth place shooting even par through 18 holes.

BYU shot five-under-par through the front nine, and extended its lead shooting two-under-par on the back nine. The Cougars had 18 birdies on the day.

Host New Mexico State is in second place at even par, with Aggie standout Viviana Macias in first place overall (-5).  UC Irvine is in third place at seven-over-par. In-state foe Utah Valley University is currently in 12th place at +20.

"We hope to increase our lead tomorrow. We will need to keep playing steadily and stay mentally sound," Roberts said.

The Cougars will play their second round of 18, Tuesday. Teams will tee-off in a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. MT. Live stats can be found on the BYU women’s golf schedule page.
