MARICOPA, Ariz. – The BYU women's golf team carded a team total of 300 in the afternoon round of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on Monday to give the Cougars a two round score of 605, good for fifth place with just one round remaining at the par-72 Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Course in Maricopa, Ariz.

Rounds of 76 from Alex White, Carly Oldroyd and Maria Yacaman, combined with a 77 from Kendra Dalton gave BYU a team score of 305 in the morning round, leaving the Cougars in a tie for 11th with Northern Arizona.

“It was a tough first round,” said BYU head coach Carrie Roberts. “Lea (Garner) was shooting a little short and missing a little more green than usual, which definitely took a toll. She made adjustments and did really well in round two though.”

Despite hot, windy conditions, BYU managed to rally in the afternoon. Garner led the Cougars in the second round, shooting a one-over-par 73—an impressive nine strokes better than her morning round. White was just a stroke behind Garner with a 74. Oldroyd and Yacaman carded rounds of 76 and 77 respectively to complete the BYU scoring in the afternoon.

BYU’s second round score of 300 tied tournament leader Nevada for best team score of the afternoon and lifted the Cougars from 11th to 5th place. BYU is within two shots of fourth place Lamar (603) and 11 shots of first place Nevada (594) heading into Tuesday’s final round.

“That shows a lot of fight from the girls,” Roberts said. “To have the best score on a tough afternoon shows our toughness. We’re looking to step up tomorrow and make a statement.”

The Cougars will begin the final round on Tuesday, April 7, with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. MST. Live scoring will be available on the BYU women's golf schedule page.
