Day One Recap

SAN JOSE, Calif. – BYU women’s golf tied West Coast Conference rival Santa Clara for third place behind Fresno State and San Jose State Tuesday in the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational.

Alexandra White finished the tournament tied for fifth place after a standout first round performance on Monday and Maria Yacaman moved up fourteen places to tie for twelfth after making par in round three.

“Today went better than yesterday,” said BYU head coach Carrie Roberts. “Maria shot 72 today and Alex shot 74, which were both great scores. If we can get one or two more playing well, then we have a good chance to compete for some titles.

Conditions in the tournament were not ideal: Monday was windy and rainy, which Roberts said took a toll on all the teams. Tuesday was sunnier and warmer but still windy.

The Cougars finished rounds one and two in fourth place Monday with San Jose State behind them in fifth place. Both teams moved up to finish the tournament tied for third place with 923 points.

“It was nice to move up a spot,” Roberts said. “It was just one spot, but it’s always nice to move up.”

Fresno State dropped from first place to second with 899 points after the third round and San Jose moved up from second to first with 897. Boise State dropped from third to fifth.

BYU head to Fairfax, California, March 9 – 10 for the Bay Area Intercollegiate tournament.
