BYU finishes fall season with 4th-place finish

O’ahu, HAWAI’I – Led by junior Lea Garner’s sixth-place finish, BYU women’s golf took fourth place at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Thursday.

"We fought hard today," BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. "There were tough pins, but we battled. I'm proud of Maria for coming through after a rough round."

In their last fall tournament of the year, the Cougars moved up to fourth place in the third and final round, shooting a total of 903 (+39). Vanderbilt finished the tournament in first place (-2), while Utah schools Weber State and Utah Valley finished in 10th (+68) and 13th (+96) respectively.  

Garner finished in a tie for sixth place, shooting five-over-par. Freshman Kendra Dalton shot 13-over-par to finish in a tie for 22nd place.

Senior Maria Yacaman made major progress in the third round, moving up 34 places to a tie for 22nd (+13). She shot a career-low 70 in the final round.

“I was trying to play well on the last day and wanted us to finish well,” Yacaman said. “I was glad that I was able to improve in this round.”

Freshman Annie Yang also improved in the third round, finishing tied for 33rd place and shooting 16-over-par. Junior Carly Oldroyd shot 21-over-par and finished in a tie for 51st place.

BYU will return for its spring tournaments on Feb. 9-10 at the Matador Invitational.
