O’ahu, HAWAI’I – Playing a great first round put BYU women’s golf in fifth place after the first day at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Wednesday.

“The first round we played solid,” BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. “In the second round, it just started pouring on us. We actually played well during the rain for the most part, but for four holes we just kind of lost it. We have to have a solid last round.”

The Cougars are in fifth after the first two rounds, shooting 27-over-par. Vanderbilt shot two-under-par as a team to lead all teams in the first day. Utah schools Weber State and Utah Valley are in 11th (+40) and 13th (+67) respectively.

Junior Lea Garner led the Cougars, shooting one-over-par and finishing in a tie for fourth place. She shot 69 in the first round.

“I started off really well,” Garner said. “The highlight of the first round was that I eagled the seventh hole. Then I made a couple more birdies and played really well. In the second round, it started raining, which held me back a little bit.” Freshman Kendra Dalton also finished in the top 20 in a tie for 17th place, shooting seven-over-par.

Despite a rough first round, junior Carly Oldroyd improved to tie for 32nd after the first day, shooting 11-over-par. Sophomore Annie Yang shot 12-over-par to put her in a tie for 41st place after the first two rounds.

Senior Maria Yacaman shot 15-over-par to finish the first day in a tie for 56th place.

BYU returns to action on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. HT. Live scoring is available on the BYU schedule page.
