Garner takes 4th, Cougars 6th at NM Aggie Invitational
LAS CRUCES, New Mexico – Junior Lea Garner’s fourth-place finish led BYU women’s golf to a tie for sixth place after the final round at the NM Aggie Invitational on Wednesday.
“We played solid today,” BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. “It was an all-around team effort. Lea carried the team and has some great momentum going into Hawaii. We need to work on saving a couple shots each girl per round so we can have a shot at the end.”
BYU shot its lowest team scores of the year, finishing in a tie for sixth place with Washington State at 13-over-par. Idaho finished in first place at 14-under-par.
After finishing the second round in a tie for first place, Garner dropped to finish in the final round in sole possession of fourth place, shooting 6-under-par.
“I played solid today, but I have room to improve,” Garner said. “Overall this was a great tournament for the team. It really boosted our confidence.”
Both freshman Kendra Dalton and junior Carly Oldroyd finished in a tie for 25th place at five-over-par. Oldroyd shot her best round of the tournament, shooting 72 ion the final day.
Senior Maria Yacaman shot nine-over-par to finish the tournament tied for 39th place. Freshman Sierra Harr finished tied for 64th place and shot 17-over-par.
Sophomore Brooklyn Anderson Hocker, who competed individually, shot 11-over-par to finish tied for 44th place.
The Cougars will take this momentum into the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Hawai'i on Oct. 21-23.
