Second place finish at Cougar Cup
PULLMAN, Washington – BYU women’s golf played a strong final round to finish in second place at the Cougar Cup on Tuesday, their highest finish so far this fall.
“We finished strong,” BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. “It was quite windy all day, but we played really well.”
Washington State won the tournament, shooting three-over-par. BYU shot 19-over-par to finish in second place.
Junior Lea Garner led the Cougars finishing tied for fourth place, one place higher than where she ended after the first day of competition. She shot one-under-par and made nine birdies.
“I was hitting my driver, hitting all the fairways,” Garner said. “I was being aggressive and making smart decisions. I put myself in a good spot.”
Senior Maria Yacaman also improved in the final round, shooting four-over-par and finishing tied for eighth place. Junior Carly Oldroyd shot 13-over-par and finished in a tie for 26th place.
The biggest push for the Cougars was made by freshman Kendra Dalton. She finished the tournament in a three-way tie for 18th place, shooting nine-over-par. At the end of the first two rounds, she was tied in 34th place.
The other freshman on the team, Sierra Harr, moved up to a tie for 37th place, shooting 18-over-par. Sophomore Annie Yang, who competed individually, also moved up. Yang finished tied for 32nd place and shot 15-over-par.
BYU has a two-week break until its next tournament. The Cougars will play in the Price’s Give Em’ Five tournament in Las Cruces, New Mexico on Oct. 6-8.
