BYU finishes in third place after day one at Hobble Creek
SPRINGVILLE, Utah - Despite weather delays, junior Lea Garner had a strong second round to put the BYU women's golf team in third place at the end of the first day of the Hobble Creek Fall Classic on Monday.
"We had a lot of good things happen," BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. "We really had it going in the second round. Everyone contributed, which is good. We have a lot of good things to go off of."
After a rocky start in the first round, Garner ended the day in fifth place at three-over-par with the help of her 11 birdies. Camille Orito from New Mexico State was in first place at one-over-par. Two of her teammates Kacey Dalpes and Viviana Macias are in a three-way tie for second place at two-over-par with Kaceelyn Pouttu from Weber State.
New Mexico State remained in first place with nine-over-par at the end of the day. Fellow West Coast Conference member Santa Clara finished the day in second place with 22-over-par with BYU right behind in third place at 23-over-par.
Though the Cougars were in third place at the end of the first round, Garner was tied for 16th. She made a huge leap in the second round to fifth place. Kendra Dalton also made a big jump in the standings in the second round. At the end of the first round, she was tied for 24th. Currently, she is tied for 12th shooting eight-over-par.
Garner was not the only BYU player to shoot birdies in the first two rounds. Sophomore Annie Yang and junior Carly Oldroyd also contributed to the Cougars' birdie count by adding five each while shooting 13-over-par and eight-over-par respectively. Senior Maria Yacaman shot eight-over-par after two rounds.
Freshman Sierra Harr and sophomore Brooklyn Anderson Hocker are competing as individuals in the tournament. Harr had an impressive outing for her first collegiate tournament, shooting nine-over-par and ending the day tied for 19th, while Hocker shot 16-over-par.
"I'm excited to see what we can do tomorrow," Roberts said. "(I'm excited) to see how tough we are to come back after a decent round and have a great finish."
BYU returns to finish the final round of the Hobble Creek Fall Classic on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
