MARICOPA, Ariz. - Freshman Alexandra White tied in 13th place to lead the BYU women's golf team to an eighth place standing after day one of the Cowgirl Classic.

BYU tied in eighth place with Portland State at 36-over-par and trailed first-place New Mexico State by 19 strokes in the 54-hole tournament.

"Each round we had a couple of girls play well and a couple of girls struggle a little bit," BYU women's golf coach Carrie Roberts said. "It was a long day and it was a challenging course. We just need to hit the ball a little bit better and give ourselves some chances."

White's 13th place finished 6-over-par after two rounds with two birdies in the first round. Her first round score of 73 was a team low for the day.

Lea Garner tied in 22nd place at 8-over-par and six birdies, while Selu Fotu tied in 35th place at 10-over-par and seven birdies.

Freshman Annie Yang tied in 46th at 12-over-par and three birdies with Maria Yacaman tying in 85th place at 22-over-par and three birdies.

The Cougars will play the final round of the tournament on Tuesday at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Course. Tee times begin at 7:45 a.m. PST with live stats found on the schedule page
