Garner and White lead Cougars to 2nd place at Entrada
ST. GEORGE, Utah - Lea Garner finished in third place to lead the BYU women's golf team to a second place finish at Entrada Classic on Tuesday.
"Second place is a great finish and we beat a couple ranked teams," BYU women's golf coach Carrie Roberts said. "They battled and pulled through in the final round."
Minnesota's Anna Laorr finished in first after a scorecard playoff at 6-over-par guiding her team to a first place finish. The Cougars finished at 75-over-par trailing first place Minnesota by eight strokes. Their second place finish led No. 43 Wisconsin and No. 27 California by three and four strokes, respectively, in the 16-team tournament.
Garner finished in third place to finish at 10-over-par with four birdies on the day, including three of her last five holes.
Alexandra White trailed Garner by two strokes for the fourth place finish at 12-over with two birdies and an eagle in the seventh hole.
"Lea and Alex were great," Roberts said. "They were awesome. We needed them to have a great round and that's exactly what they did for us. We're going to see if our four and five players can do better, because we just need one more scorer."
Maria Yacaman tied in 25th place with a single birdie in the final round to go 24-over-par in the 54-hole tournament. Freshman Annie Yang tied in 41st place at 29-over-par with a birdie to start the final round, while Selu Fotu finished in 81st place at 53-over-par and a single birdie.
Individual players Carly Oldroyd (+43) and Brooklyn Anderson (+44) finished in 71st and 74th place, respectively.
In-state teams Weber State, Southern Utah, Utah Valley and Dixie State College completed the tournament in 11th, 14th, 15th and 16th place, respectively.
BYU will head to the Mountain View Invitational on March 28-29 in Tucson, Ariz.
