Garner in 4th, Cougars in 2nd after day one
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - Lea Garner finished in fourth place to lead the BYU women's golf team to a second place finish on day one of the Matador Invitational.
"It was a good team effort," BYU women's golf coach Carrie Roberts said. "We played great again and played solid. I think overall I'm happy with our first day out of winter. There were a lot positives."
BYU completed day one of the eight-team tournament in second at 36-over-par behind CSU Northridge who finished 14-over-par.
Garner finished at two-over-par trailing three players tied in first with four birdies in the first two rounds.
"It'll be an exciting day tomorrow," Roberts said. "Lea's hitting it well and only two strokes behind first."
Freshman Alexandra White, who joined the team in January, finished with eight birdies for the day and tied in eighth place at eight-over-par.
Annie Yang tied in 14th at 11-over-par with four birdies, while Selu Fotu finished in 29th place at 15-over-par with all four birdies coming in the second round. Maria Yacaman tied in 35th place at 19-over-par with two birdies.
Individual participants Carly Oldroyd finished tied in 45th at 25-over-par, while Brooklyn Anderson finished in 47th at 26-over-par.
The Cougars return to action at the Wood Ranch Golf Club on Tuesday with tee times beginning at 7 a.m. PST. Live stats can be followed at golfstats.com.
