Day 1 Recap

PULLMAN, Wash. - BYU golfer Lea Garner led the Cougar team to a fifth place finish at the Cougar Cup tournament Tuesday.

"I thought there were a lot of positives," BYU women's golf head coach Carrie Roberts said. "We had our best team score of the year and it's something we can build on and try to continue to improve upon."

The BYU women's golf team finished at 58-over-par behind West Coast Conference foes Gonzaga (+34) and Santa Clara (+56). Washington State (+22) remained in first place after the final round with Idaho (+50) and Santa Clara moving ahead of BYU.

Garner, finishing at three-over-par, remained tied at second with three birdies on her 6th, 9th and 18th holes in the final round.

"Lea is playing awesome," Roberts said. "She's very steady and consistent and she's worked hard. She'll continue to play well."

Two BYU players finished in the top 25 in the two-day tournament with Selu Fotu tying for an 18th place finish with a total of 232. She was followed by Annika Afoa Kahaialii who tied at 23rd with a 235 total and Annie Yang, who tied at 26th, finished with a 236 total. Carly Oldroyd tied at 65th place, 38-over-par, to conclude the third round.

Individual player Brooklyn Anderson tied at 69th place, 43-over-par, to finish the tournament.

"The weather was bad and there was a lot of rain, but they hit well on the back nine and overcame the rough start," Roberts said.

The Cougars will compete next in the Price's Give Em' Five tournament on Oct. 7-9 at the NMSU Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M. Live stats can be followed on golfstats.com.
