BYU Women Win Stanford Invitational Collegiate Division

PALO ALTO, Calif. (Sept. 30, 2000) BYU underclassmen continued to shine as the Cougars placed five runners in the top 10 to win the Collegeiate Race at the Stanford Invitational Saturday. In a field of 30 teams, BYU finished with a score of 36 to beat a Stanford team that came in second with 45. The third-place team, Cal State Chico, had a combined team score of 180.

The top two runners for BYU were redshirt freshmen Katie Martin, who crossed the line second place in a time of 18:29, and Amy Bair, who finished third in 18:36. Martin has scored for BYU in each of the first three races of this season. Baird, meanwhile, has been recovering from injuries that kept her out until this race.

Coach Patrick Shane was pleased with his team's performance, especially the emergence of Bair as one of the top runners.

"I just can't say enough about Amy Bair's race," Shane said. "For her to come out and run so well, especially after the injuries she's had, it really says a lot about how far she's come."

Sophomore Jamie Philburn (18:59) was the third Cougar finisher, placing ninth overall, and senior Tara Haynes (19:02) was just behind her in tenth. Sarah Ellis (19:09) rounded out the scoring for BYU, finishing in 12th place.

Stanford was the only other team with multiple top-ten finishers, placing three runners in the lead pack. But the Cougars' depth allowed them to come away with the win.

BYU will take next weekend off in preparation for the Pre-national Invitational Oct. 14 in Ames, Iowa.
