LOGAN -- Jessica Fitu and Caschjen Atagi hit back-to-back homeruns Monday to lift BYU to a 9-1 victory over Utah State in Logan.

“We focused on solid pitching, strong defense and good hitting,” said BYU head coach Gordon Eakin. “We want to continue to work on the basics and stay in shape for the rest of the season.”

On the heels of a strong pitching performance from Christie Zinanti, Fitu and Atagi put the Cougars up for good in the top of the third by hitting back-to-back home runs. Following Fitu’s eighth blast of the season, a three-run shot, Atagi followed with a solo blast, also her eighth of the season.

With that home run, Fitu recorded her 47th RBI of the season and took sole possession of third place in the Mountain West Conference in that category.

In a game shortened by the eight-run mercy rule, Zinanti, BYU’s career win leader, recorded her 11th win of the season, giving up no runs and striking out two in three complete innings of work.

Also providing offensive support for the Cougars were freshman shortstop J.C. Clayton, who was 3-for-3, and senior first baseman Andrea Ramirez, who was 2-for-2 with 2 RBI.

The Cougars return to Provo for their final home game of the season against Utah Valley Wednesday at 6 p.m., before traveling to Utah on Saturday.
